I always found memory quite a difficult topic to teach when I worked in school – all our ways of thinking about it are models, not perfect ways of understanding it but good enough. If I remember correctly (!), information from our senses (like the eyes) go to the brain and, if we’re paying attention to them, get stored as short-term memories. Then, if we give them more attention at this stage (because they’re remarkable or we’re trying to remember them, for example) they will get transferred to longer-term memory storage, from where we can bring them back when we want to remember stuff. This is basically the same whether the input comes from the eyes, ears or nose, I think!
This is a brilliant video that explains how memory works – I wish I’d found it when I was still a teacher! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUoJc0NPajQ
