This might be possible! A couple of different ways come to mind:
1) Maybe we’ll figure out how to prevent agin and illness, or how to make replacement bodies and transfer into them when our old bodies get too used up. I sincerely hope we’d either have other plants to move to, to prevent overpopulation, or otherwise we’d have to stop having kids pretty sharpish!
2) Maybe we’ll learn how to transfer out consciousness into a computer, and become immortal that way. It sounds kind of cool to have computers so complex we could exist inside them – a bit like San Junipero, my favourite Black Mirror episode
I think Kerrianne’s onto something there – it’d get unbelievably crowded if people just stopped dying! But if people couldn’t die then it figures they wouldn’t need to eat (you can’t starve, after all), so maybe their environmental impact wouldn’t be as big as otherwise. But even so, I’d hate to imagine how bored people would get with an eternal life on a planet full of other people who don’t really change, so life on Earth would definitely suffer as a result! Happily, short of storing our selves on computers like Yo mentioned, I don’t think it can be done.
Agree with the others. We’d have to stop having children as much and have to move off world.
I like the idea of storing our consciousnesses on to a computer or even substances that could act as a really complicated computer by moving atoms around.
