  Fantastic question – As a species, we are obviously a long way off being able to harness all of the energy that the sun produces (which is the criteria for a type 1 civilisation). I would like to think that we could get there, but it will take us a very long time – hundreds, maybe thousands of years? Not wishing to be too pessimistic, but I worry that before that point, we will have been subject to some kind of catastrophic event – war, asteroid, super volcano etc. that could wipe us out first.
