• Question: Why did you chose you part of science

      If you mean why did I choose the type of science I study?

      For me the brain is how we understand the universe and each other. It’s like the camera lens we see the world through. So I wanted to understand a bit about how that lens works, to better understand myself, other people and the world around me.

      I think lasers are cool 🙂 I got to do a project in Brazil where I looked at how very intense light is affected by materials, and I was hooked! I wanted to investigate light more.

      I fell in love with volcanoes because they are so powerful and unpredictable. They are generally seen as very destructive but many people live near them (and rely on them) because of the benefits (fertile soils, hot springs etc).

      Because plants are more important than I ever realised in school. They’re important in tonnes of cultures, and give us medicines, materials and food: there are 8 different plants in my chocolate bar here, up to 10 in my lunchtime crisps, and more than 12 in the little pot of salsa in my fridge door. Plants really are everywhere in our lives, and how humans around the world use them fascinates me. But so many plants, and people’s understanding of them, are heading towards extinction, often because of things we humans do. So in my work I want to shed light on the importance of ancient humans on a precious, disappearing forest in Brazil, because the forest is part of their history too. And I want to help save the forest so it can be part of our future as well.
