Actually, there are thousands of different types of nerve cell (called neurons) in the brain and spinal cord and also several different types of neurons that connect our bodies to the spinal cord.
The brain and the spinal cord are called the central nervous system.
The nerves that come out of the spinal cord and brain and into the rest of our bodies are called the peripheral nervous system.
Each of these neurons has a different, special role to play.
So I think the nerve cells in the brain and spine are more similar than those in the peripheral nervous system but they’re all slightly different to each other in different ways.
Does that answer your question?
