I’m not Oli! lol. I’ll answer the question anyway since I’m not sure if Oli will see it since it was only asked of me 🙂
I find that working where I do actually makes my social life really busy! I’m something of an introvert by nature, but I end up going to lots of conferences and doing events like talks and workshops – or like I’m a Scientist! I usually find that when I get time to myself I’m glad for a moment to relax because I’ve been so busy talking with others about how to make science better and more open.
Oh wait, me! My social life now is in some ways way better (and in some ways a bit worse) than it was before I started this job/PhD. It’s way better because I don’t have to work evenings and weekends – I was a teacher before and I worked after hours all the time outside holidays. It’s also a little bit worse because I’m still getting to know people in Reading, whereas I had quite a lot of friends in Canterbury (having lived there for a few years). But some of my favourite lab/social times are when I’m with colleagues and friends just sitting with our microscopes having a chat 🙂
